Today's ride, on the 8th of June, was with GS Nation UAE to the Kalba Hanging Gardens. Like every ride with this crew it was fantastic — nice smooth cruising, a couple of surprises along the way, and one big surprise from Dr. Daddy at the end. Stay with me; the plot twist is edible.

Nine Riders and Some Lying Clouds

We met at the usual meeting point just after Fajr time, around nine of us, rolling out in that lovely half-dark before sunrise. As the kilometres passed, the sun came up over the convoy — beautiful, and immediately warm. Then came hope: clouds on the horizon, with actual rain in the forecast for some parts of the UAE. I was genuinely happy. But these turned out to be fabulous, decorative, completely useless clouds — not a drop fell, and with time they simply wandered off, leaving us back under the bright open sun. Classic UAE weather: all trailer, no movie.

After resting our backsides at rest stop one — where the proud GS riders lined up their bikes for the mandatory portrait — we carried on through the gorgeous coastal Corniche drive. Fujairah or Sharjah, the border does its own thing out there, but the sea view doesn't care about emirates. One more quick stop for a chat, then the final approach to Kalba.

The Hanging Gardens (Manage Your Expectations)

I'd never been to the Hanging Gardens, so I was picturing something grand — Babylon with a UAE budget. Reality: it's a small area right on the side of the road. We didn't even stop, partly because it was getting properly hot, partly because there wasn't much stopping to do. We rolled past, nodded respectfully at the greenery clinging to the rocks, and turned for home. Sometimes the destination is just the excuse.

There was an absolute massacre of goat paye and Lahori-style chikkar cholay. We totally nuked those payas — followed by a fabulous lassi.

Dr. Daddy's Surprise Venue

At the farewell spot, the group wanted breakfast — and that's when Dr. Daddy deployed his surprise. Just follow me, he said, I know an alternate venue. Four of us followed him to a spot called Banan, and you can guess what happened next: an absolute massacre of goat paye and Lahori-style chikkar cholay, polished off with proper lassi. The whole feast was hosted by the good doctor himself — some of you know him as the adult advice doctor; we know him as the man who understands that a ride isn't finished until somebody serves paya at 8am. That, friends, is the GS Nation difference: BMW engineering on the road, pure Lahore at the breakfast table.

Bellies full, we headed home and the ride was concluded. If dawn missions with this crew sound like your thing, the Farfar Mountains gravel ride is GS Nation off the tarmac — and the UAE clubs guide explains how to find your own breakfast brotherhood.
