Canada M1 to M2 — How I Became a Legal Biker in Ontario

MotoMoku hits Canadian soil… and immediately hits the books.
This wasn’t just a tourist ride — it was the official start of my journey to becoming a licensed motorcyclist in Canada. Step one? The amber M1. Step two? Two rigorous days with Learning Curves, Ontario’s renowned motorcycle training program.

What started in a classroom at Mohawk College in Hamilton soon turned into a real-world mastery bootcamp. From tight U-turns and swerve drills to navigating through slippery rain-soaked parking lots, every moment sharpened my riding instincts — in a way I never experienced in Dubai.

Here’s what went down:

🎓 M1 & M2 Breakdown:

  • M1 License: A quick stop at ServiceOntario, a multiple-choice test, and boom — the amber card in hand.
  • M2 Course @ Learning Curves:
    • Day 1: 3-hour classroom → clutch control, braking, vision training in a closed lot.
    • Day 2: Full day of practice, rain included. We adjusted, adapted, and sweated it out through weaves, sudden stops, and swerves.
    • Final Eval: No surprises — same coaches, same drill formats. Just performance under pressure.

🧠 Lessons I’ll Never Unlearn:

  • Lane Positioning by Lane Count — Ride to see and be seen, not just stay centered.
  • Intersection Stops — Slight angles + smart positioning = escape routes & visibility.
  • Rain Riding — Be smooth, double following distance, and avoid lane centers. Traction is a game of patience.
  • Streetcraft Over Speed — Canadian roads are full of surprises: potholes, narrowing lanes, and sudden gravel patches. Ride smarter, not faster.

🎥 Filming & Gear:

  • Filming Spots: Mohawk College parking lot, DriveTest centres (visuals), helmet POV.
  • Gear Used: My own helmet, gloves, boots — basic rental bike.
  • Video Touch: Brief credits to Traction Control Canada for visual license guides.

🎉 Final Moment:

Group high-fives all around — we all passed! A little soggy, very sore, but officially M2-certified. Even caught a goofy selfie to celebrate the moment. 🥳

🔜 What’s Next?

With my license in hand, I’m off to ride Southern Ontario’s hidden gems. Expect a 4-part mini-series covering:

  • Hamilton valleys
  • Niagara & wine routes
  • Toronto’s eastern trails
  • Charming backroads with fall colors and farm stops
